If you define these , it is easy to understand. A standard meta tag contain all (author ,time, date etc). These are helpful for visitors/rankings. Meta tags plays an important for website. Google see meta description where yahoo see meta keywords etc

Metatags like meta keyword and description are still important to help boost a website's visibility to search engines. However, as the web grows wider with more users online, some people have overused this method and exploited it. As a consequence, the value is not that much higher than before.
