Sitemap is of two types -
a.) HTML Sitemap b.) XML Sitemap HTML Sitemap is for user & allows them to easily navigate through the website. XML Sitemap is for crawler which helps search engines to understand the website while crawling it.

Sitemap is a file having all the urls of website at one place so that crawler can easily crawl all web urls at same time. It is a best way to increase the crawling of website.

It is not mandatory to have sitemap but if you have some benefit from SEO pov. XML sitemap is simply used to provide the link navigation structure of your website to google bots.

sitemap.xml is very important for SEO. Without sitemap.xml, you website won't be visible to internet users on search engine. Therefore, it is necessary to submit a sitemap.xml to Google Webmaster tool to make your website visible on search engine.
