Importance of 404 page

Hi everyone,

I am checking a site and found that whenever we write something after the / of URL, it redirects to the page.

let say the domain is xyz.com
and when we write something like xyz.com/hdskdhkfoigo874787923
it redirects to xyz.com

Generally, the site shows 404 page for anything like that. Just want to know that how does it affect the site? And How should we deal with it?

I think, whenever a user is trying to reach a web page which is not their in the website, he should first get the customized 404 error page with message something like URL not found and then should be redirected to the home page.
