Login to Webmaster tool and click on Property that you want to check backlinks then select Link to your Site by clicking on Search Traffic. Their you will get all backlinks.

Correct method is to check it from webmaster tool or their are many tools to check back links like ahrefs.com or backlinkwatch.com

First of all make a detailed strategy for getting back links. Make sure your links are from relevant niche. Don't use over optimized anchor text aggressively while building links. Your links profile must contains links from different sources. Balance your links to all pages and don't point all links to your home page. Finally don't use paid links.
