Forum posting is an part of off page activities so, this is important in SEO. Forum posting is more helpful for getting back links and create traffics for a particular site.

Forum posting is one of the ways to build links back then, but I don't think it still give the same benefits as it did before.
Forum posting is now considered as link scheme (because of forum signature). I don't know how much benefit it can still give but at some point forums are still the best online community and best venue for learning.
