Alt Tags is simply an alternative description of the images(s) you use on your site. It is also a convenient way for people with disabilities to understand what each of the images in about. It does not have anything to do with the text you use on the site, but rather with the images.

Actually 'alt' is not a tag, it is an attribute.
The alt attribute is a additional bit of information you can add to links (<a>) and images (<img>) to provide additional information about the tag. Generally 'alt' attributes are used by certain pieces of handicapped software or by SEO crawlers to help identify what exactly the tag is doing.
