Canonical tag is used when you are duplicating the content of your site on to some other pages. With this tag you are pointing to webpage with original content and taking reference on this page.

Canonical tags can also be useful to solve www and non-www duplicate content—where two URLs & combat duplicate content

If you have duplicate sites like with www or without www then for soft redirection we use canonical tag
