Both are effective. But nowadays SMO is also getting more importance because it leads to your community to exchange services within the community. It is a good strategy to build your own community to get benefits from without going somewhere else you may not know the credibility of the firm.

Now a days, SMO is a part of SEO. Without SMO you can get and achieve higer ranking. We must include the SMO part in the online marketing campaign.

SEO is search engine optimization. It is a technique used to make any website popular and to bring that website on the top most position in google search. You can use various search engine optimization techniques like social bookmarking, rss feed, web 2.0 etc..... But SMO is social media optimization, it use various social networking sites for promotion of website.

I think SEO is more important because the traffic which a search engine can give you, social media cannot give that. But the SMO is much better if you have strong fan base and good likes..
