Sitemaps are a protocol that allows the webmaster for a website to inform Google and other major search engines about URLS on a website that are available for crawling. Sitemaps allow search engines to find all of your webpages, that they might otherwise miss when indexing. The XML sitemap allows you to specify additional information about each URL such as:

When it was last updated
How often the site changes
How important the page is in relation to other pages on the site
Having this information within one document helps search engines understand your website and crawl it more intelligently. Sitemaps are an inclusion protocol, where Robots.txt files are exclusionary. For more information on robots.txt files please read our article.

Sitemap.xml is type of format of sitemap file. It is a file having all the url's of website which we can submit through webmaster tool or we can paste the sitemap.xml file in the root directory. We also use sitemap.html which is another format of sitemap file. Basically xml format is designed for the crawler and html format is designed for the user on website.

Sitemaps are very useful for new websites and blogs. As most new blogs usually don’t get many backlinks to their individual posts, it becomes harder for search engines to discover all of their posts and pages. Sitemaps allow those websites to help search engines crawl their sites more efficiently.

An XML sitemap feed lists all of the pages on your website that you want the search engines to know about. Sitemaps help ensure your site is fully indexed by feeding your content to search engines.

Sitemap is a xml format file which contains the list of all url in a website. It helps the search engine crawlers to crawl your website and get all the details about internal url of a website.

A Sitemap is an XML file that lists the URLs for a site. It allows webmasters to include additional information about each URL: when it was last updated, how often it changes, and how important it is in relation to other URLs in the site. A site map (or sitemap) is a list of pages of a web site accessible to crawlers or users.

It contains the URL of the site and located in root folder. The file contains about the frequency sync information as well.
