Semantic search seeks to improve search accuracy by understanding the searcher's intent and the contextual meaning of terms as they appear in the searchable dataspace, whether on the Web or within a closed system, to generate more relevant results.

Semantic search denotes search with meaning, as distinguished from lexical search where the search engine looks for literal matches of the query words or variants of them, without understanding the overall meaning of the query.

Semantic search describes a search engine’s attempt to generate the most accurate results possible by understanding:

Searcher intent.
Query context.
The relationships between words.

Semantic Search

Semantic search is a data searching technique in a which a search query aims to not only find keywords, but to determine the intent and contextual meaning of the the words a person is using for search. Semantics refer to the philosophical study of meaning.

What is Semantic Search?

In layman's terms, semantic search seeks to understand natural language the way a human would. For example, if you asked your friend, “What is the largest mammal?” and then followed that question up with “How big is it?” your friend would understand that “it” refers to the largest mammal: a blue whale.
