Sitemap.xml is a file that has lists of URLs a particular site. It helps search engines to understand your website during crawling. It allows you to add some additional information about your URL such as - its last updates, how often you sites has changed & how the page is important in relation to the other pages on the website.

A Sitemap is an XML file that lists the URLs for a site. It allows webmasters to include additional information about each URL: when it was last updated, how often it changes, and how important it is in relation to other URLs in the site. This allows search engines to crawl the site more intelligently.

Sitemap is use to record the of all URLS of the site. It gives the information about the URls on the website which is availabe to the index.

Sitemaps are a protocol that allows the webmaster for a website to inform Google and other major search engines about URLS on a website that are available for crawling. Sitemaps allow search engines to find all of your webpages, that they might otherwise miss when indexing.

If say simple and easy words sitemap is a that document that helps Google and other search engines better understand your website while crawling it.
