Pinging backlinks, usually means that you ping a page that is pingable (like a blog post comment) which links to your site (backlink). When you ping backlinks, it increases your chances of getting that backlink indexed and get its link juice (if applicable).

Ping sites send ping to different search engines about the website update. So when you have any update in website or blog and you want to crawl that update then you need to do ping submissions.

In my experience once I used online tool for pinging & few days later my website lost its position in serp. It's better to do it manually.

Ping SEO: Pinging refers to letting know the search engine that we have done changes in our website, added more content, updated content etc, so crawler can visit website and index the website./webpage again.
