Keyword density means the ratio of your keywords in light of the total number of indexable words placed in your webpage. For example, you have 100 words article, then having a 1% keyword ratio means that you should have the presence of your keyword one time within that 100 word text.

As per the recent Google updates, no fixed keyword density percentage is there. The rule is to use the keywords relevant to you in a natural way throughout your content. Use your main keywords in the important places like meta tags, headings etc. Google gives preference to relevant keywords so using a set of keywords that are synonymous with your main keyword will benefit your website.

You should keep keyword density at natural level otherwise it will count under keyword stuffing which can be harmful for your website. Your keyword density should be 3-4% for better optimization.
