HTML and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) are two major technologies for creating web pages. HTML provides the structure of the page, the layout of CSS (visual and auditory), for a variety of devices. Along with graphics and scripting, HTML and CSS are the basis for creating websites and web applications.

HTML stands for hypertext mark-up language. HTML is a computer language devised to allow website creation. Hyper is the opposite of linear. Old-fashioned computer programs were necessarily linear - that is, they had a specific order. But with a hyper language such as HTML, the user can go anywhere on the web page at any time. Text is just what you are looking at now. Mark-up is what is done to the text to change its appearance. Language is just that. HTML is the language that computers read in order to understand web pages.
