Hashtags are such a prominent part of tech culture today that it’s rare to find anyone who doesn’t know what they are. In fact, the hashtag is so recognized that it was added to the Oxford dictionary in 2010, and the Scrabble Dictionary earlier this year (#standards). Yet even as most people have come to know what they are, many people still don’t understand how to use hashtags.

I use relevant keywords in hashtags but not more than just 2 - 4. Your posts can get more visible on social networks.

Using a hashtag in a social post is as simple as adding the ‘#’ sign before a single word or phrase without spaces or punctuation (numbers are okay).
Though it’s easy to quickly create and send out a post with a hashtag in it, there is some basic etiquette when it comes to using them. We’ll cover some of the advanced ways to use hashtags, but first lets take a step back and look at what Mediabistro put together outlining some of the basic rules for creating a tweet with hashtags. Though it’s easy to create a hashtag, it’s not quite as easy to do it in a correct or relevant way.

Hashtags turn topics and phrases into clickable links in your posts on your personal Timeline or Page. This helps people find posts about topics.

Ii you click a hashtag, you'll see a feed including articles that hashtag. You can also see a number of relevant hashtag at the top.

Please note that:

Hashtag must be written as a single word with no spaces
You can put a number in the hashtag but punctuation and special characters (such as $ and%) would not work
You can search for the hashtag in the toolbar at the top of any page
You'll only see posts shared with you
