Put simply, AMP is a way to build web pages for static content (pages that don't change based on user behaviour), that allows the pages to load (and pre-render in Google search) much faster than regular HTML.

The AMP stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages and it is an open source program from Google aimed at making a “better, faster mobile internet”. It is a Google-backed project with the aim of speeding up the delivery of content through the use of stripped down code known as AMP HTML.

AMP is an open source HTML framework developed by the AMP Open Source Project. It was originally created by Google as a competitor to Facebook Instant Articles and Apple News. AMP is optimized for mobile web browsing and intended to help webpages load faster.

AMPs are essentially pages that use a very specific framework based on existing HTML in order to streamline the information exchange with browsers, creating a seamless, faster and more efficient user experience. In other words, it makes loading speed for pages almost instantaneous.
