Meta Tag helps webmaster to provide information about their website to Search Engine (Google). Meta tags are added to the section of HTML page.

The Three Commonly known are below:

Meta Title: One of the most important meta tag is Meta Title. This is the text that you'll see at the top of your browser. When You give title to your page in that means you are giving meta Title.

Meta Description: This tag gives a short description of the page which helps search engines and searchers to understand the page is about

Meta Keywords: Area where webmaster includes all keywords used over that page. But years ago google devalued Meta Keyword Tag Due to keywords Stuffing. Keyword meta tags quickly became an area where someone could stuff often-irrelevant keywords without typical visitors ever seeing those keywords that’s why Google has ignored meta keywords for years.

Meta tags are snippets of text that describe a page's content; the meta tags don't appear on the page itself, but only in the page's code.

This is not true (anymore).

As far as I know, the search bot doesn't care about the meta description. It's only for usability. Well, you could say it helps with your SEO strategy, because a good description helps to get a good CTR which helps you with your ranking, but it's only an indirect effect.
