Referring domains are websites from which the target website or web page has one or more backlinks. For example, if a web page has a backlink from the New York Times, then it has one referring domain. If it has a link from the New York Times and Forbes, that it has two referring domains.

I’d love this style of explaining it, let’s break the term into two

Referring and Domain

Now let’s explain each of these words, to get the proper sense of it.

Referring: This is a “verb” which means to refer or to mention a source of information (in this case.

In other words the person who is referring, is saying:

HEY, THIS GUY HAS THIS INFORMATION AND I WANT YOU TO LOOK AT IT.

Domain: This is a subset of the internet which remains unique and its usage is under the control of an organization or company.

I’d love you to highlight the last part of this definition, as it will help us understand how ‘backlinks’ or ‘referring domains’ are built.

So what then is a Referring Domain?

A Referring Domain is a “unique web address which points or links to another website.

Let’s take an example.

If in this article I link to Ahrefs An SEO tool, Smartinnovana becomes a referring domain to Ahrefs.

Now that we know the meaning of a referring Domain, let’s see how it’s different from a Backlink.
