The Google Sandbox is an alleged filter placed on new websites. The result is that a site does not receive good rankings for its most important keywords and keyword phrases. Even with good content, abundant incoming links and strong Google Page Rank, a site is still adversely affected by the Sandbox effect.

The Google sandbox or “sandbox effect” is a filter that Google applies to new websites that want to rank in the search results for specific phrases.

The Google sandbox or “sandbox effect” is a filter that Google applies to new websites that want to rank in the search results for specific phrases. The filter exists to prevent SEOs and spammers from easily manipulating search results by satisfying all of Google's major offsite and onsite factors.

The sandbox effect, aging delay. Definition: The Google sandbox refers to a commonly held belief that Google has a filter that places all new websites under restrictions for a certain amount of time to prevent them from ranking in searches.

Exactly what the other commenters said. To avoid the sandbox penalty, you can
A) Buy an aged domain that has built up a little bit of trust.
B? Avoid building too many links to quickly. (I'd say no more than 50/month)

Google sends your website in sandbox if you break its any guideline.

I'm surprised to see the above explanations. I used to think sandbox is when your site gets penalised for using black hat seo techniques, like building lots of low quality links from sites with poor reputation, article spinning etc.

I was under that impression as well. That building too many links too quickly looks unnatural to Google

The Google Sandbox Effect is a theory used to explain why newly-registered domains or domains with frequent ownership changes rank poorly in Google Search Engine Results Pages (SERPS). In other words new websites are put into a “sandbox” or a holding area and have their search ratings on hold until they can prove worthy of ranking.
