Will 404 errors affect search engine ranking?

I had actually set up joomla in my domain with the sample information. I now eliminated it and set up wordpress in my domain. There are a lot of 404 errors in my domain. Will they affect my online search engine positions. If so what should I do to prevent it?

No. yes if the 404 error page performed well previously in SERP and generated more visits from other sources.
