About sitemap and SEO

These days everyone is talking about the importance of the sitemaps. I want to know whether it is that much important to have a sitemap. I also want to know how a sitemap can help my website. Is there someone who can really help me regarding this? My friends told me that it becomes easier to navigate by the visitors. They have also told me that it helps immensely to find the sites in the search engines. If this is true, then I will like to have a sitemap for my site. I am thinking of launching my website. I dont want to follow any wrong steps. Please tell me about this.

There are two types of Sitemaps. First is for visitors using breadcrumbs. Second is XML sitemap for search engine. Use of both is good practice. First is obviously helpful for visitors and will improve UX. Second is useful for search engine crawler to access your website. It is also helpful to see how much pages of your website is indexed in search engine. If a section of your website is not indexed, you can check it and change it. Google webmaster tools gives this information.

having a sitemap is a great idea. there are several sites that can help you create a sitemap. Add these to Google webmaster tools and Bing webmaster tools so they can crawl every link associated with the sitemap and index them as well.
