Long tail keywords are a type of keyword phrase that has at least three, and some times as many as five words in the phrase. Long tail keywords are used when the website wants to refine search terms to the web page, as well as when the searcher is looking for something rather specific.

I agree. But the context in which long tail is used is also important.
Setting up a campaign in AdWords consisting with long-tail keywords will generate relatively few visitors (of course this depends on the size of your target group and how active they are in internet searches).

In my line of business potential customers simply do not very often use three or more words in Google searches. It's usually confined to two words.
Research into the search behavior of your target group is important.
The result is often a mix of short-tail and long-tail.

Long-tail keyword is better than short one as long as it's not too long. A specific keyword need no more than 5-6 words, more than that and it will become useless instead because of the massive loss of traffic.

Long tail keywords are not exact keywords, these include filter words like in, for, of and also include local targeted areas that users usually search.
