Generally this error message means you need to log on somewhere first. If you have just entered these and then immediately see a 401 error, it means that one or both of your user ID and password were invalid for whatever reason.

401 error shows for your user id and password invalid for some of the reasons. it will redirected to 401 error page.

This means that the username and password entered must be invalid/wrong then this message will be displayed.

Error 401: Unauthorized means; the client does not have the required privileges to access the site.

Re: What is 401 Error?

You intermittently cannot connect to a Web site that is hosted on Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) 6. When this behavior occurs, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following:
HTTP Error 401 - Unauthorized: Access is denied due to invalid credentials.
This behavior occurs if the following conditions are true:-
The Web site that you try to view uses Integrated Windows authentication.
The application pool for the Web site recycles during the authentication process.

The 401 Unauthorized error is an HTTP status code that means the page you were trying to access can not be loaded until you first log on with a valid user ID and password. If you have just logged on and received the 401 Unauthorized error, it means that the credentials you entered were invalid for some reason.

Error 401 Unauthorized. Introduction. The Web server (running the Web site) thinks that the HTTP data stream sent by the client.

401 Error

We sometimes get the message while surfing internet that “401 Authorization Required”, which is also defined as HTTP Error 401.
Now before going to the Problems & Solutions part let’s take a look upon it. HTTP means Hyper Text Transfer Protocol, which is an application protocol for collaborative, distributed and hypermedia information system. In short it generally runs the internet in a well manner. HTTP has different source code.

Now coming back to our topic, if we see “401 Authorization Required” message in our web browser that means we first have to login i.e. have to give user ID and password to access the specific web page. If we already gave the credentials and still after that it shows the message, it means we have given wrong credentials.

Sometimes it can happen like this also: we gave the credentials in our office computer and it showed the web page, but when we tried it with exact same credentials in some other place it showed the message “401 Authorization Required”. It happened because that specific web page can only be seen on some particular computers. Your current computer’s address is not authorised to see the web page.

When a website uses Integrated Windows authentication and if a someone enters the wrong username and password then this message will appear.

01 Unauthorized, the HTTP status code for authentication errors. And that’s just it: it’s for authentication, not authorization. Receiving a 401 response is the server telling you, “you aren’t authenticated–either not authenticated at all or authenticated incorrectly–but please reauthenticate and try again.” To help you out, it will always include a WWW-Authenticate header that describes how to authenticate.
