Fairs and festivals also play equal important role in promoting tourism of the place. North East India is one region which is rich in tribes and its different fair and festivals highlight its rich indigenous culture of the region. Because people
of different religion resides in this seven sisterly states, therefore chain of festivals is celebrated throughout the year. Owing the fact, North East India is often termed as home of most colourful fairs and festivals.

Fair and Festivals: Driving factors of North East Tourism

Hornbill Festival of Kohima, Nagaland is one of the major festivals of the state that takes place between 1-5th December of every year. Organized with the motto of encouraging inter-tribal interaction and promoting cultural heritage of the state, the colourful dances, sports, cuisines, crafts, religious ceremonies are major highlights of the festival.

Bihu is the most famous and colorful festival of Assam is celebrated mainly in mid April with pomp and glory in entire state.

Losar, Dree and Solung are some of the most popular festivals of Arunachal Pradesh. Talking about Dree festival, it is the biggest agricultural festival of Apatanis, which is celebrated with zest and followed by prayers and sacrificial offerings. Moving towards Meghalaya, best time to visit the state is in the month of October-November as it is time when people celebrate Shillong Autumn Festival with full zeal. Street carnival, beauty peagents, flower shows, kite flying, rock music, etc., are some of the highlighting feature of this three day event. Nongkrem Dance Festival and Wangala festival are other popular festivals of the state.

Chapchar Kut is an agricultural Festival of Mizoram, which is celebrated before the activity of planting takes place. Cheraw, the bamboo dance, is major attraction of this festival. Along with it, folklores are sung, music is played and elaborated dresses are worn by people. Eight day religious festival, The Kang Chingba of Manipur is as famous as Puri Rath Yatra of Orissa. It is festival which shows journeys of Lord Jagannath, sister Subhadra and brother Balabhadra. Their idols are carried in massive chariots which are pulled by
thousands of devotees. Entire night, feasting and dancing takes place.

Saga Dawa is the holiest festival of Buddhism people. The festival of Sikkim is held to commemorate the birth anniversary of Lord Gautam Buddha. So, like this there are many other festivals celebrated with joy and enthusiasm by people of North East India
