The HTML sitemap is for humans. It is a quick map/overview of the pages on your site which are listed using links (with anchor text). People can use it to locate a page they need quickly and easily.
The XML sitemap is for search engine spiders/bots. It is there to tell the search engines which URLs are part of your website.

HTML site map is mainly for the for ease of navigation , they are easy to undesrtand..they are mainly for the human and not for the search engine..the problem with the HTML site map they are not able to updated by itself..

XML sitemap are for the search engine ..they are not understandable for a normal internet user..but they are automatic up datable ..you can set frequency over there...

Html sitemap gives overview about your website to human users, but xml sitemap is helpful for search engines to read and understand that website. All the webpage contents can be understood by one page. A sitemap is must for any website.
