Yes, it is useful and in some cases it doesn't make any sense but it is not harmful for your site.
Generally, Search Engine submission is performed by online tool who ping our link in various search engines. Before select all search engines, make sure all are working well or not. If you found anyone irrelevant then remove it from the list.
