What is external pages ??

They are pages that are not internal.

An External Page is one which embeds another website as part of a page's content.

A link which is going from your website to other website is generally referred as external link.

So if I have many pages which are all well optimized for different keywords my website wont rank as well as if I had less pages?

Complete nonsense. If you have more pages then you can use more good content and optimize for more keywords.

More pages will help you rank for more search terms.
