Long tail keywords are at least 3-4 words long (or longer… sometimes much longer) and are less competitive. Examples of long tail keywords would be

Car insurance for bad drivers

Seattle Washington business loans

Weight loss tips for men 50 years plus

You want to try to optimize a page for 1-2 keywords, usually the fat head terms with the most traffic, and try to work in the long tail versions you want to rank for 2-3 times in the text on the page. Long tail keywords are keywords that are typically 3-4 words in length and longer. So, if you by chance were able to rank for sony cameras, a long tail keyword phrase would sony cameras point and shoot, or buy sony cameras in new york.
