Are profile links still good ?

Has anyone recently tried Angela type of profile links? Are they still effective for ranking improvements? They used to work beautifully few years back but some people still claim they are effective for backlinking purposes so I would like to know from people who have tried.

SEO Back links

My focus is leave do follow high page rank back links. I have to let the back link age 90 days to impact local SEO.
