Google Possum is an algorithm change in local search results. The main purpose of the update was to diversify the local results and also prevent spam from ranking as well.

On September 1, 2016, Google announced a massive update to the Local algorithm, Possum, due to a large number of businesses thinking their local listings were dead and gone (Search Engine Land). On the contrary, these listings were actually just filtered within the search engine results page (SERP).
