Long tail keyword that usually consist of 3+ words and are much easier to rank for due low competition.

Short tail keywords are search phrases with only one or words. Their length makes them less specific than searches with more words.

Short tail keywords are search phrases with only one or words. Their length makes them less specific than searches with more words. “Egg” (1 word) is an example of a short tail keyword, whereas “Make scrambled eggs fluffy” (4 words) is a long tail keyword.

Long tail keywords are those having low searches with low competitions.

Short keywords are competitive keywords having high searches with high competition.

If you're promoting a fresh sites then first you should go with long tail keywords. And once you'll get rank on long tail keywords then you can go with short keywords.

Short tail keywords are 3 words or less. Examples include: “athletic apparel,” “DVD player,” or “engagement ring.” Short tail keywords are also known as “head” terms. They may be the first thing you think of when you are deciding where to go to eat (“Chinese food,” “pizza delivery”), what to do (“dance clubs,” “roller coaster park”), or where to worship (“synagogue,” “Catholic church”).
Long tail keywords however are a little different compared to short tail keywords. These keywords are more than 3 words. They are definitely a lot more targeted and not as broad. You may not bring in as much search traffic from long tail keywords but the traffic you do bring in is the kind you are looking for.

Examples of long tail keywords include: “summer women’s athletic apparel,” “super Blu Ray HD DVD combo player,” or “white diamond engagement ring.” Long tail keywords are obviously a lot more specific than short tail keywords; as a marketer this actually can work very much in your favor. But there are pros and cons to both types of keywords.

Long tail keywords are usually keyword phrases that have relatively less number of searches. These keywords are often used to rank your website faster in search engines. Short keywords are generic keywords and have maximum searches in Google.

Should we use long tail keywords or short keywords in SEO?

Longer keyword phrases that are more specific and less common are named as long tail keywords. Usually, long tail keywords in search engine optimization (SEO) are focused more on the niche product or service of the business.
