What is the role of Google's Fred update?

Google Fred is an algorithm update that targets black-hat tactics tied to aggressive monetization. This includes an overload on ads, low-value content, and little added user benefits. This does not mean all sites hit by the Google Fred update are dummy sites created for ad revenue, but the majority of websites affected were content sites that have a large amount of ads and seem to have been created for the purpose of generating revenue over solving a user’s problem.

Google won't comment about the "Fred update," but based on our own analysis, many affected sites saw up to a 90% drop in traffic. ... After reviewing now upward of 100 different sites, I believe this update targets low-value content sites that put revenue above helping their users.

“Fred” is just a humorous euphemism that Googler Gary Illyes made up on the spot when pressed for a name for an unconfirmed, hypothetical update that a small percentage of (mostly) aggressive Web marketers attributed to March 7, 2017 or thereabouts.

Since March, the marketing industry has been closely tracking a Google algorithm update, nicknamed “Fred” by one company executive. While some businesses haven’t noticed a difference in their search rankings as a result, many others have seen a considerable drop. Businesses that don’t normally pay attention to their rankings should double check to ensure all their sites are still featuring prominently in relevant searches.

Whether your business has noticed a change to your search rankings or not, it’s important to be aware of the latest changes and how they may affect your marketing efforts. Here are a few things every business should know about SEO in the post-Fred era.

Don't stress about new updates, guys. Google said, that they do 2-3 updates A DAY. The times are definitely over and gone, that you see a massive effect from just one single update. It's more like a permanent process of adjusting and updating.
