Referral traffic is also important because it provides a steady source of traffic outside of search engine hits. Referral traffic drives targeted visitors to your website, which may increase revenues as they are more likely to purchase a subscription or buy your product.

Referral traffic is Google's method of reporting visits that came to your site from sources outside of its search engine. When someone clicks on a hyperlink to go to a new page on a different website, Analytics tracks the click as a referral visit to the second site. The originating site is called a “referrer” because it refers traffic from one place to the next. Referral traffic is one of three statistics tracked by Google Analytics. The others are Search traffic -- visits from a search engine -- and Direct traffic to a domain.

Referral traffic is the segment of traffic that comes on your website through another source, like through a link on another domain. Analytics automatically recognizes where traffic was immediately before arriving on your site and displays the domain names of these sites as the referral traffic sources in your reports.
