Well according to me, SEM would include making use of search engines tools and technologies to increase your website presence and promote it further and SEO would be using methods to help rank a website higher in the search engines, in order to increase traffic to your site. I hope that helps, as there have been many discussions on these.

The purpose of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and SEM (Search Engine Marketing) is to improve the visibility of a website in search engine results, but they serve different functions within digital marketing:

1. SEO (Search Engine Optimization):
Goal: To improve organic (unpaid) rankings on search engine results pages (SERPs).
Purpose: By optimizing a website's content, structure, and technical aspects, SEO helps attract more relevant, high-quality traffic from search engines.
Key Areas:
On-Page SEO: Optimizing content, keywords, meta tags, headings, and user experience.
Off-Page SEO: Building backlinks and establishing authority through external signals.
Technical SEO: Ensuring proper website speed, mobile-friendliness, crawlability, and indexing.
2. SEM (Search Engine Marketing):
Goal: To drive traffic through paid advertising on search engines (e.g., Google Ads).
Purpose: SEM focuses on placing ads in front of users who are actively searching for specific keywords. This includes strategies like Pay-Per-Click (PPC) advertising.
Key Aspects:
Keyword Targeting: Bidding on specific keywords to display ads.
Ad Optimization: Creating compelling ad copy and landing pages to maximize click-through rates (CTR) and conversions.
Budget Management: Controlling ad spend for maximum return on investment (ROI).
Summary:
SEO helps you rank organically over time, focusing on long-term traffic growth.
SEM uses paid strategies to get immediate visibility, allowing for quick results and more control over ad placement.
Both work together to maximize a brand's online presence by targeting organic and paid search opportunities.

SEO focuses on the creation and enhancement of webpages to improve their rankings in organic search results. SEM focuses on the use of paid advertisements to rank at the top of SERPs. To help pages rank organically, marketers use SEO best practices to create content that search engine algorithms tend to favor.
