How to work of Google's Webmasters tool ?

I have been thinking of using Google's webmasters tool for my websites. However, to verify as site owner I need to download an html & upload to my site.
Wanted to know if adding the html has any short-term or long term drawbacks.
Please share your experience.

I am on the way to do SEO. thanks for your idea . It is new to me. I am also waiting the answer of that question.

You can upload the html file to root directory and leave it. there is no harm, everybody follows the same :)
