You may use Google AdWords tool which fares well for a light keyword research.Since I prefer extensive research, I use Keyword Country to pinpoint profitable keywords and spy on my competitors SEO strategies.

There is no fixed amount as to how many keywords should one use. So long as you are not stuffing, it should work well.
