To analyze the current position of the website, go through the following things:
  • Determine the number of backlinks
  • Meta Tag analysis
  • Domain Age
  • Total indexed page
  • When was the content added

There are a lot of things you need to do. Check the website (design, usability, content, page speed), check the SEO factors (domain age, meta tags, content created for keywords, backlinks if any), check the competition.
