Before you start doing search engine optimisation you should focus on on-page SEO. Link building is an important part in SEO. We do it for building back links. Back links improve our search engine ranking and improve traffic to our website. However keep in mind that not all links are equal. The links that count are coming from reputable places with relevant content. Getting links from farm sites won't help you at all.
