It is best to optimize on several aspects in parallel. That includes: good content, good landing page design, good load times (server), internal links, backlinks, etc.
Use a plugin like Woorank (for Chrome browser), to get you up to speed. It tells you which aspects are ok, and which are sub-standard and need improvement.
