On page nowdays is just as important as building backlinks used to be. I first use Googles Speed test (just serch Google speed test) and Google will actually tell you all the problems to fix on your page. Make sure your page is mobile and printer friendly, google look at that too. That usually pushes the page I am working on several pages closer to #1. Then I work on keywords and good rich snippets. Include locations in your keywords if you have a business, it helps your local placement.
