Page rank is important, yes. But, don't make the mistake of thinking page rank means you get #1 in Google SERPS. I know lots of sites with PR0 or PR1 that are in front of PR5 sites for the keywords typed. The real secret to the #1 spot is one word "Relevancy." If you page is more relevant than a PR9 website, you get to be above the PR9. It is that simple.
