To start SEO work for your new website use on page optimization first.
On page optimization includes following option page title, meta tags, title tags, etc.
Then use off page optimization techniques forum posts, social bookmarking, image backlinks, web 2.0 etc.
I think using good techniques and website to create backlinks will help you in getting more traffic. If you are starting SEO then use easy techniques first.
