If you want to do it right, you need to take SEO as a whole package, learn and implement its methods. There are some really good webinars and online books on SEO. Try webinars on Coursera and Alison. Opt for White Hat SEO and then do on page SEO and after off page (which includes social media networks, blog and forum posting, social bookmarking, guest blogging). On page is a bit harder (in my opinion), but once you get it, it'll be a piece of cake. Just keep updating yourself, because SEO rules do change.
