XML sitemap is for crawlers, which tells them the list of webpages a website have and importance of each individual page to the home page. We can also mention change frequency to all individual page and also the last updated date.
When a crawler crawls the website, they first check for XML sitemap and Robots.txt file.
It is also recommended to mention URL of the XML sitemap at the end of robots.txt.
