A broken link is a URL that is not linked to a webpage. When you click it, you'll be directed to a 404 error page (Page Not Found) or any similar message along those lines that tells you that the webpage doesn’t exist, no longer active or has been moved.

Broken links negatively impacts user experience and ranking so it’s very important to fix the errors as soon as you find them. Here are some of the free tools you can use to find the broken links - Google Webmasters, brokenlinkcheck and deadlinkchecker.
