Simply put, it means the link no longer exists. If you use fully white-hat methods and manually build links through quality content, guest posts, and outreach, you shouldn’t run into this too often. But, the way many people build backlinks can result in some shady links.

Over time, the site that posted the link might delete it, it might simply go out of business, or it may replace it with a more valuable link. Sometimes, legitimate links can be removed, but most often you shouldn’t have to worry about this. The only situation I can imagine is if it was a limited time post (i.e. an interview or other media piece that might be later archived without the link).
