SEM or Search Engine Marketing encompasses all aspects of search marketing including PPC, SEO, affiliate programs, social media campaigns, etc.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

SEM is the marketing process with a goal of getting more visibility in search engines either by getting more free traffic (SEO) or paid traffic (Paid search advertising).

Through paid search advertising you essentially buy advertising space in the search engine results. So instead of trying to rank higher and get free traffic you pay to appear in front of the searches.

The most well-known advertising agency for PSA is Google Adwords. Through Google adwords you can get your ads appear in the Google search results and you pay only for the clicks on your ads. This is also the reason why the whole process is called Pay-per-click or PPC. Bing and Yahoo have a similar system but it not so successful and widely known as Adwords.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

SEO is the process of optimizing your web site for the purpose of getting free traffic from search engines. An optimized web site is more easily understood by Search engine crawlers, so there are more chances of ranking higher in SERPS.

SEO- Search Engine optimization is the process of increase keyword ranking on search engine.
SEM- Search Engine Marketing is a form of Internet marketing that involves the promotion of websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages.

SEO : Search Engine Optimization is the process of Gaining Web Sites Traffic From Search Engines Through Unpaid listings..

SEO: Earning traffic through unpaid listings

SEO and SEM are not competing services. SEO is considered a subset of SEM services. If you want to conduct business on the Internet you need to be visible in both organic and advertised links, which means you need both SEO and SEM.

Stands for:> Social Media Optimization

Definition :> RSS feeds, social news and bookmarking sites, video and blogging sites, as well as social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Tumblr, Pinterest, Instagram, Vine, etc.

Purpose :> To generate traffic on a website or blog.

SEO means Search Engine Optimization. For this you don't need to pay Google, Facebook, Yahoo or any other channels. You will do this by your own or an expert can help you to get better ranking in search engines. Basically you might pay to someone but not some channels.

On the other hand, SEM means search engine marketing where you pay Google, Bing, Yahoo, or other search engines to display your keywords or ads at the top of organic search results or on the side section or sometimes on the bottom sections of organic search results.

In SEO we have to do submissions(For backlinks & traffic) while in SMO we have to mak post on different social media sites(only for traffic).

SEO stand for "Search engine optimisation", it is the process of getting traffic and increasing back links on search engines. On the other hand SEM stand for "Search engine Marketing", it is the marketing process to achieve more visiblity on SERP(Search Engine Result Page) by using paid traffic or by Social Media.
