Kolkata: Here's a piece of good news for Bengali-medium students. On January 12, they will get an app to hone their English skills. To be launched officially next week, Abheda English will start from basics by translating sentences from Bengali to English and then go on to help with construction of sentences, right usage of prepositions, common verbs and correct pronunciation.
Brainchild of Abheda Foundation, an NGO, the app promises to inculcate the skill of communicating in correct English. Though the product teaches English through Bengali for now, the app will widen its reach to other Indian languages in future.
"This will be a boon for underprivileged children who do not have the resources. We hope it will be a milestone in the quest for social inclusion through digital inclusion," said Biswajit Mitra, founder member of Abheda Foundation. The former IT professional had developed the content after much research and the software has been developed by Zabingo Softwares.
After much research on common mistakes Abheda English first removes the psychological hurdles and common mistakes through detailed explanations on fundamental sentences though innovative quizzes. With scope for self-assessment on lessons learnt, Abheda English is made for both self-learning as well as teaching.
Once launched the app can be downloaded for free from the Google play store for free for anyone who has a basic android phone.
Next the app will have scope for Santhals to learn English through Santhali. Abheda Foundation is collaborating with Viswa Bharati University for the purpose."The aim is to impart quality education using digital technology. We have started it in Kolkata and we intend to go to the villages later with partner NGOs. Why would the rural India be deprived of the digital world?" Mitra told TOI.
