The h2 tag is a subheading and should contain similar keywords to your h1 tag. Your h3 is then a subheading for your h2 and so on. Think of them as a hierarchy based on importance, the above being more important than the below

Header Tags are an important on-page SEO part because they’re used to link to the search engines what your web website is about. Search engines recognize the copy in your Header Tags as important than the staying. This starts with your h1 and works its way down in importance to the h2, h3 and so on.

There’s two parts to this really:

If the H2 tags are too big, make them smaller by editing the CSS - this is the ‘right’ answer to fix your issue. Add a new class, say, ‘.small-title’, give it a font size that works better for you and apply it to any H2 tags that you want to be smaller. It’s a quick fix that means you can focus on other, more important aspects of your SEO.
That said, it doesn’t make a huge amount of difference, however, SEO is a holistic thing. Google is looking for H2 titles to describe different aspects of the topic you’re talking about - if it sees H4s instead, we don’t know how it perceives this exactly. We know you won’t get penalised or anything nearly so drastic. All we do know is, it’s not absolute best practice (the ‘optimisation’ bit of SEO).

We all know the importance of displaying header tags in websites. The general consensus being to display one H1 tag on a page and use H2 tags for headers within content, H3 for sub-headers, and so on.
But how important are H2 tags are a page?
Consider a page that has an article that is 500 words in length.
Does it matter if that article does not contain a H2 tag?
What if a strong tag was used for a header in the article instead of a H2 tag?
