First of all, your question is fairly broad. IMO the best way to do social media is to put the user first. Find your target market and put out relevant information that they want to hear/learn about. Takes time, but you can have a community of people who trust you, listen to you, and share your content with other people. Also, your target market may change depending on which social network you're using, it may not be the same for every site. Ex. Twitter - mostly younger, Pinterest - mostly women, Linkedin - mostly working professionals, etc...
